New Display Case for Reference Dept.

The Steuben County Old Settler Record is currently sitting in a new glass display case made by members of the N.E.I. Woodworkers Club. Dewey Powers Hardwoods donated some of the red oak lumber used and Don Wunrow donated lumber. Leonard Roselle did most of the construction and finishing work. The leaded, beveled and stained glass back panel was made and donated by LuAnne Dennis. The display case is beautifully made and we thank those who contributed. Talk to a Lawyer Day is Monday Jan. 16

The Volunteer Lawyer Program of Northeast Indiana in conjunction with the Indiana Bar Association presents an opportunity for attorneys statewide to offer free legal consultations to members of the general public. This service is open to the public without regard to income, on a first come first served basis. It will be held from 9 am to 4 pm.

Fine Woodworking on Display this Month

Members of the Northeast Indiana Woodworkers Club or (N.E.I.) have filled the library display cases with members woodworking. Mr. Bill Sumney has been a woodworker for 12 years; it is his hobby and passion. Bill made a manger and nativity that encompasses 10 pieces and uses 170 pieces of wood. There is no paint or dyes used. The pieces are created using bird's eye maple, cherry and purple heart wood. It is gorgeous. His other piece on display is Intarsia. It has 131 pieces of wood, 23 different kinds of domestic and exotic woods. We also have keepsake boxes of many different types of word made by Leonard Roselle. Floyd Baughman is a master with the band saw his pieces are on display. David Dennis has customer woodworking pieces on display. Michael Couture showcases heirloom wood products. The library has pictures on Facebook but you should really see them up close. N.E.I. meets at the library every third Thursday of the month at 7 pm. If you have a love of woodworking we welcome you.

Winter Reading Program for Adults

The Adult Winter Reading Program will begin Jan. 9 and end on March 8. Read any three books and fill out an entry form and enter that in the drawing. The more you read the more chances you have to win. There are 5 prizes this year. We have new books and a gift certificate to The Hatchery, Lake Shore Design, Throops, American Made Shopper and Friends of the Library. Watch for the display to go up inside the library in January.

Paul Oakes is the only person alive who knows the whole, real story of how the Baltimore Colts moved to Indianapolis. As chairman of the Stadium Commission in 1977 he made the call to Robert Irsay that set up the beginning interview in the negotiations to transfer the storied franchise to Indiana. The book, "How the Colts Came to Indianapolis" details how a shy high school athlete grew and progressed to pitch professional baseball, founded the Indianapolis Professional Sports Association, ran for the U.S. Congress, promoted big league sports and helped transform Indianapolis as it was called into Super Bowl City.

Happy Retirement to Kay Lash

3rd Annual Amateur Photography Contest

We had a great crowd last night at the awards ceremony! 72 Photos were submitted for judging and enjoyed by all the library patrons. The photos always brighten up the library. Thank you to everyone who entered, thank you judges and Friends of the Library for sponsorship of this event. 265 people voted in the People's Choice category. In photo standing: People's Choice winnter Lori Benson, judges Barbara Knights-Hale, Shawn Holmquist and Dean Orewiler. Seated: Brett Steele 3rd place, Kelsey Glasscock 2nd place and the first place winner was Jody Morgan.

We invite the public to stop in and place a bid on beautiful handcrafted wreaths with half of the proceeds going to Project Help and half to the Carnegie Library. A few members of the Angola Regional Artist Guild: Cindy McCormick, Judy Houk, Sandy Kabes and Karen Sigl showcase just one of their wreaths they have prepared. We will have over 20 wreaths to choose from each one ready to decorate your home and support a worthy cause. We hope you will stop in and see all the unique and artistic talent.

October is National Dollhouse and Miniatures Month

Biography:
"Deana Tritch, married and mother of three young adults. My husband bought my first dollhouse kit when I was pregnant for our first child in 1988. I made a new one with each pregnancy and then took a 10 year break to focus on being "Mom." My husband bought me a new kit for Christmas in 2003 and I was off. I now have 22 dollhouses and 21 room boxes/scenes. I've worked on dollhouses for friends' young children and I started an online shop to keep the house from getting completely overwhelmed with minis. I love this hobby because I can use skills I've learned in other crafts to build, furnish and accessorize my mini homes." Stop in and see 22 miniature dollhouses and room scenes she has made. They are very cool!

Amateur Photography Contest Set to Begin

The 4th Annual Photography Contest will be held September 12 to October 24. You must be 16 years of age to enter. Pick up the rules and entry forms at the front desk. The category is open and you can submit two 8 x 10 matted photos. The judges this year will be Barbara Knights Hale, Shawn Holmquist and Dean Orewiler. An awards ceremony will be held Thursday evening at 6:30 pm on Oct. 27. All cash prize winners will be announced and receive their awards. The People's Choice will be voted on from Oct. 25 to Oct. 27 and announced at the ceremony. We request that you be present this evening and that all winners will be photographed for press. This event is being sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

ArtPrize Motorcoach Saturday Oct. 1

New Floor Easels for the Library

The library would like to thank Don Wunrow, Dale Hart and Len Roselle and other members of the N.E.I. Woodworkers club for giving the library 4 floor wooden easels made by the members. They are so sturdy and versatile, they will be a nice addition to our exhibits and displays we offer at the library. This is in addition to the 16 table easels that were donated by members. We appreciate you all so much!

Armchair Travelogue to Holland & Belgium

Chet and Glenna Pinkham, our library travel gurus present Holland and Belgium in Springtime on Wednesday evening June 22 at 6:30 pm. Their Power point presentation will have gorgeous photos of tulips and walking on cobblestone streets in 500 year old cities like: Antwerp, Ghent, Veere, Hoorn, Enkhulzen, and Amsterdam. Highlights of the tour involved visiting the Kinderdijk windmills. A site of nineteen 18th century windmills that are still lived in. Another place they visited was the Delta Works Flood Control Project built from 1960 to 1990, truly a wonder of the modern world. The spring flowers were in their prime as we went to the Keukenhof Flower Park - 70 acres of landscaped gardens, streams, fountains, and buildings. For Glenna the site she most wanted to visit was the Aalsmeer Flower Auction where about ten million flowers are sold daily (throughout the year) and shipped around the world. The public is invited to attend.

Bloomin' Pots Silent Auction

The Open Art Forum artists have hand painted clay pots that are filled with potting soil and ready for a plant. If you would like to place a bid, stop at the front desk. The auction closes at 8 pm. on May 26. All money generated will go towards purchasing art and garden books for the library collection. There are 13 pots on display inside the library. Fiber Arts Exhibit Underway

Cherry Blossom Fesitval Personalize Bookmarks

Japanese artist Chikuen Kato will be personalizing handmade bookmarks with your name brushed in Katakana on Monday May 9 from 9:00 am-noon and on Tuesday May 10 from 5:30 pm-7:00 pm inside the library. Nature's Storyteller: The Life of Gene Stratton-Porter

On Tuesday June 21 at 6:30 pm local author Barbara Olenyik Morrow will present a power point presentation on the life of Gene Stratton-Porter. Barbara recently published a book for the Indiana Historical Society Press that examines Stratton-Porter’s early life exploring the treacherous Limberlost Swamp in northeastern Indiana to her development as an enormously popular writer. Stratton-Porter used her popularity to campaign for conservation, and some claimed she was as influential as President Theodore Roosevelt in igniting public interest in wildlife causes. Prominent scholar and critic William Lyon Phelps observed that Stratton-Porter “led millions of boys and girls into the study of natural objects,” and he even called her “a public institution, like Yellowstone Park.” The public is invited for this special evening books will be available for sale. This presentation is being presented by Friends of the Library.

Growing up in his grandparents upholstery/fabric shop and being the son of an interior designer, Joel's early college education centered around architectural and interior design. As he explored the fine arts particularly painting he eventually created his own technique of "fabric college." This very tactile art work is an intricate blend of fabric and leather to create colleges that are then further enhanced with painted details. the result is remarkably detailed images that startle the eye and intrigue the mind. This program is being sponsored by The Angola Regional Artist Guild and is open to the public.Joel will speak about his art on May 10 at 6:30 pm.

Civil War Slave Quilts Presentation.

Sharon Zonker a retired teacher, author and long-time Civil War “buff” will present a program on “Civil War Slave Quilts” on May 11 at 6:30PM at the Angola Carnegie Library. Sharon and her husband, Jerry, have been interested in studying and visiting Civil War sites since their marriage. Their honeymoon was spent in Gettysburg. Since retirement, they spend part of the winter in Charleston, SC where the war started 150 years ago this year.
Over the years, Sharon has gathered stories and information focusing on the women and slaves connected with this nation-changing war. Sharon is a quilter and uses quilts to tell the stories she has gathered. While in Charleston she has attended many seminars, toured several plantations, and become acquainted with slave descendants. She shares their stories through her quilts.
Sharon has shared her quilts and stories with groups in Charleston as well as many quilt and historical societies throughout Indiana. This past year she has spoken at the Honeywell Center in Wabash, Marion Library, Tippecanoe Quilters, and at the Morton Center at Purdue University.
Sharon is excited to share new quilts and stories that she has recently completed after this winter’s visit to Charleston. These include slave Josiah Henson, Underground Railroad conductor Catherine Coffin, and an example of a Confederate “gunship” Auction Quilt.

Cranking Up Your Writer's Voice

On Saturday May 14, June 11 and July 9 Jennifer Decker will be offering creative writing workshops. All forms of creative writing will be covered. It is free and open to the public. Jennifer is a reporter with The Herald Republican. She is a Hoosier transplant from Detroit with a bachelor's degree in journalism with an English minor from Oakland University in Rochester, MI. She has written for several Michigan newspapers and has had poetry widely published in periodicals including the Paterson Literary Review and the Wayne State Literary Review. She has studied creative writing for years and believes in the power of the written word to uncover our truths. Call the library to register.

Table for Ten-New Director

Table for Ten will now be facilitated by Marieda Smead. She has been a member for almost a year now. They will still be meeting on the second Thursday of each month at noon. On May 12, 2011 at noon read Weight Watchers Complete Cookbook, chose a recipe from that book and bring in in for sampling. On June 9 read Williams-Sonoma Kitchen Library Vegetarian and bring a sampling of your favorite recipe.

Mountain Dulcimer Lessons and Jams

The Dulcimer Jam lead by Susan and Jerry Sonner meet the first Monday of each month to learn music. The jams are open to all acoustic instruments. The workshops are held in the large meeting room from 8-8 pm. If you want to learn how to play they will help you. If you want to jam with other dulcimer players, come and join in. These lessons are free and everyone is welcome to join in. Bring your dulcimer or come listen to the music.
